When people decide to get a pet, they usually have two routes: buy or adopt. The first choice might seem convenient because, for example, there could be a wider selection of breeds available to you. However, the second option not only saves the animal you bring into your home but also frees up space in the shelter for another critter in need, allowing them a chance at finding a loving human as well. To honor those who commit to the latter, Bored Panda even dedicated a whole series, where every month we publish a list of wholesome and sweet pictures of the newest adoptees. Continue scrolling to check out February's!

Awesome Adoption

Senior woman at shelter holding adopted cat near cat tree, embodying pet adoption joy.

I am A volunteer at a cat rescue in Pittsburgh. I had a shift tonight and two women walked in with a carrier. The one woman introduced herself as a caretaker to the other elderly woman. She said that the older woman was already approved for adoption and was ready to pick out a cat.
The older woman then said that she wanted to pick out the oldest cat in the shelter because she was an “old lady” who needed another “old lady” to keep her company.
She ultimately chose an 8-9 year old female cat named Lumpy. This cat has no teeth. Not one. We don’t know if someone had its teeth removed for health reasons or if they fell out. But the cat is toothless.
I watched the woman interact with Lumpy. I heard her whisper to the cat, “Don’t worry, I’ll get you all wet food so you don’t have to chew.”
After she confirmed that Lumpy was her choice she put her in the carrier and looked at me and the other volunteers and said, “I think I got my smile back”.

Such a sweet story but I can't help but laugh at the cat's perfect name, "Lumpy". That's adorable.

There is a "love for a lifetime" program in my areas cat shelter. Seniors matched with seniors, adoption fee waived and vet care provided for the cat's lifetime. A win win !!

To get a better understanding of pet adoption, we contacted PAWS, or the Progressive Animal Welfare Society, a non-profit organization based in Lynnwood, Washington, dedicated to promoting animal welfare through various rescue, rehabilitation, and advocacy programs. Established in 1967, PAWS focuses on rescuing and caring for domestic animals, as well as injured, orphaned, and sick wildlife.

Commenting on recent trends, Bree Koch, the organization's Customer Service and Adoptions Manager, told Bored Panda, "Large dogs are experiencing much longer stays at the shelter than in past years. This appears to be related to rental properties implementing more breed and size restrictions. If you truly want to save a life, adopt a large-breed dog!"

I Adopted A Very Shy Cat Today Who Mostly Hid At The Shelter. Both The Staff And I Agreed That She'd Probably Need A Lot Of Time To Feel Safe And Start Being Social

When they have that first truly deep sleep, you know they feel safe. When they’re on the street or in an unsafe home, they don’t sleep deeply because they need to stay aware so they can run and hide in case some human or animal is out to hurt them. Sad, but true. Deep sleep is something they have either never experienced, or haven’t had the pleasure of being able to experience since they ended up on the street or in the bad and unsafe home.

F/U on kitty from OP: This girl is an absolute sweetheart. I almost missed out on her at the shelter because she hid inside her little bed the entire time, but when I finally noticed her and said hello, everything just felt "right". Somehow it felt like we had a connection just in those few minutes when she carefully greeted me, and it seems like that feeling was correct. The staff said that she would be a wonderful little companion if given time to come out of her shell. I agreed, but I don't think either of us thought it'd happen within hours. I prepared so many hiding spots for her in case she wanted to hide away for the first few days or even weeks, but she barely leaves my side. She just wants cuddles, loves her belly rubs and can't stop making biscuits.

I did the same thing. I saw a little cat at the shelter, hunched over shivering. He was so pathetic I brought him home, where he hid under the bathtub for two weeks. Now he’s the extrovert of the house, even trying to make friends with Freddie the Incredible Grouch. He’s also the only cat I know who likes tummy rubs.

    Adopted A Depressed Cat

A black cat from the shelter resting its head on a person's hand, symbolizing the joy of pet adoption.

Today my husband and I adopted this sweet older kitty (8 yo). We saw the shelter’s post about her - a surrender from someone who owned her since a kitten. She’s been there almost a month and has spent the entire time balled up in the corner with her eyes shut. Our senior kitty (16) passed away last summer and we decided it was time to get another “senior.” She got all her testing at the shelter and is in great health, except emotionally.

We set her up in her own room and she is currently hiding under a dresser! I am hopeful for her :)

One of the volunteers at the Humane Society said to read aloud to our scared cat, to get her used to our voices. Doesn't matter what we read. I'd read my rom-coms, hubs would read the sports pages. It worked but took about 3 weeks for her to be comfortable with us. (This was about 10 cats + 2 husbands ago. 😁)

My gal is blind and she's so fun to interact with. We have different phrases for her to help her get around. Some of the things we've taught her include to duck on command (we say "watch your head" ), to stop moving forward if she's about to bump into something ("careful"), and where a treat is on the floor if she can't find it (we tap next to the treat). She also has a certain meow she uses when she wants us to help her get down from high up.

The poise of a deity .. with or without sight..

If you feel inspired by these pictures, know that the process of adopting a pet isn't difficult and is designed to ensure the well-being of everyone involved, including the animals and their new families. "Typically, it starts with filling out a questionnaire about your lifestyle and what you're looking for in a companion," Koch said.

"An adoption counselor will [then] chat with potential adopters about any animals that may be a good fit before setting them up on a visit to spend time with specific cats or dogs. Most shelters will then hold the animal for a short period while the adopter gets supplies together before bringing the animal home."

Getting a pet can also lead to letting go of something else. For example, dog owners report that the biggest lifestyle sacrifices they made include:

    1. 39.29% lived on a tighter budget to afford their dogs’ expenses.
    2. 13.96% moved from an apartment to a house so their dog would have a yard.
    3. 7.47% stayed at a job they disliked because it allowed them to work remotely or had a dog-friendly office.
    4. 6.78% broke up with a significant other who didn’t like their dog.
    5. 5.25% took a pay cut or accepted a position with fewer benefits to work remotely or have access to a dog-friendly office.
    6. 4.57% left a job they liked because another company let them work from home or had a dog-friendly office.

    COOKIE!!!!!!

"Costs are a major [factor]," Bree Koch of PAWS told us about the biggest concerns the organization has observed among (potential) adopters.

But it's better to think about and prepare for the challenges than it is to go in blindly and then potentially have to put the animal's (or your own) livelihood at risk. "Veterinary care can be expensive. Make sure you come up with a budget and select an animal with care needs that fall within those parameters."

"Of course, emergencies and unplanned expenses can happen, so be sure to investigate options like pet insurance or low-cost clinics in your area," Hoch added.

However, nearly all pet owners (97%) consider their animals part of their family, so if you can make it work, getting one is so worth it.

    Meet Oatis, My New Roommate

Blind dog sitting in a car seat, wrapped in a black jacket, illustrating a joyful pet adoption.

I adopted Oatis a week ago because I wanted to share my new home with someone. He’s the sweetest: doesn’t bark and loves being held.

I don’t know much of anything about where he came from. The rescue said he was a stray, but when I examine his mannerisms too hard it’s easy to think he didn’t come from the best home.

I’ve never had a senior dog before so there is a few adjustments I need to make. He doesn’t bark, so it’s hard for me to know when he needs to go out. He doesn’t walk well, so I have to come up with new activities for him to do. And he just had a dental that took all of his (rotten) teeth, so getting used to new food and treats has been hard on him.

I am lucky to have him, and my goal is to just spoil him as long as I can. Any advice and tips are appreciated!

I adopted a senior yorkie, the dogs home reckoned she was at least 12, she had probably 3 teeth left after all of the dental work, and she was blind in one eye and a bit iffy in the other she had to have eye drops every day. Even though she hardly had any teeth, she could still nom on dog chews and her favourite snack of pork scratchings. Unfortunately, we only had her for 4 months,we think she was used for breeding so wasn't neutered, she ended up with pyometra, we had to make the difficult decision to try and risk a big surgery which could've finished her off or say goodbye and thank you for being such a character in such a short time of our lives. Miss you Millie

I have a twenty yr old Pom that I adopted when he was ten. He is still doing great and was chasing my Berner girl about an hour ago. Senior feeding is a hit and miss. Try to keep him on a clean diet. I would start to educate yourself from legit senior dog web pages and ask the experts.

Make sure your furniture is where you want it to be and leave it there. In fact, follow the rule of "a place for everything and everything in its place". Once Oatis learns the lay of the land, he'll be less inclined to bump into things.

    Adopted Kittens 🐈

Shelter-adopted kittens in a carrier, one tabby and one ginger, exploring their new environment together.

Was only supposed to adopt one, but the foster told me that the tortie cat helps the orange cat calm down during vet visits. I’d be heartless if I separated the two of them, so they’re both going home with me.

    I've Been Adopted

A gray and white cat, adopted from a shelter, sits on a desk at home.

About a week ago, a neighbor told me this little guy was wandering our neighborhood. I took a couple pictures outside to post on different sites. Less than 90 minutes later, he was crying at my front door. Opened the door, he came in, and immediately rolled over at my feet. Less than 30 minutes later, he was asleep on my lap.

I've never had a cat, and really didn't like them too much. But, I am totally in love!!!

No microchip, and he's been seen wandering the neighborhood for months. So he is now an indoor cat named Judge, and I'm a cat mom!!

Have you got the cat tree yet? Watch out for your plants, in fact, check your plants to see if they are poisonous for your babies. Litter box(es) should go in the bathroom, or buy a mat so litter doesn't go everywhere. The food should be gourmet and they will let you know which toys they prefer.

    Meet Honey

Adopted shelter cat with orange and white fur relaxing on a green mat in a cat tree.

This is Honey, she was a stray we took in and adopted as a family member, she’s sooo sweet and adorable! We originally thought she was a kitten, but once the vet checked her out he said she’s actually around 3 years old and probably won’t get any bigger, she will fill in more with weight but her size is quite tiny measuring as a 7 month old kitten. Sadly she also can’t meow and has a tail that’s seems it was broken and healed in an odd way that gives her the most adorable curly tail that’s hard to take a picture of but it curls like a little pigs tail and I am absolutely obsessed with it haha.

My theory: Because people think it's "giving them a chance" to live in nature rather than possibly being euthanized... Many think that for rabbits too. But they forget that they are domestic rabbits! And cats are too! And why not instead make an effort to find them a new family? 😒

4 Days Ago My Family Rescued Scar From A Post On Reddit!

Shelter-adopted dog Scar, 8 months, laying on a surface and sleeping peacefully, showcasing adoption success.

smittensky posted a ton of photos of rescue dogs from their local shelter around 5 days ago! I absolutely loved two pups and my family agreed that Scar was a total baby.

At the time, I wasn’t sure where the dogs actually were so I messaged smitten and turns out they were only an hour away!

I called the shelter and they said Scar was going to be transferred to a less crowded shelter and adoption wasn’t possible at the time. I begged them to keep him there and we all drove up there and adopted Scar that same day as they were able to stop the transfer!

Here’s some update photos! He was such a scared muffin but he’s already so happy. His temperament is awesome and he’s so goofy and sweet.

He had his first taste of hotdog yesterday and is already working on the “come” command 🥰

    Thank you, smittensky!

We’ve had her for about 3 days now and she’s been super sweet and delightful. She was shy at the shelter but quick to open up to us once at her new home.

Exactly! She doesn't look like she's two months old. Maybe because she was the "runt" of the litter? If so, she will need a lot of love and milk for a while (maybe she couldn't get her share). Good luck to you both!
